With all of the cold weather, natural bug repellent is probably the LAST thing on your mind…but with spring quickly approaching, it’s never too early to get stocked up on bug spray!
While Bug Soother was originally created for humans, our customers continually show us new ways to use our all-natural insect repellent! One popular use of Bug Soother is on animals. From horses to dogs to tigers, customers use Bug Soother all the time to keep their furry friends safe, happy, and gnat-free. But, outside of the animals we mentioned, it is also effective at keeping the gnats away from our feathered friends, like chickens and turkeys.
Although it is not widely known, gnats can be more than just annoying; a large swarm of gnats can be very harmful to chickens, even leading to death in some cases. There are over 56 million chickens in Iowa alone, so as you can imagine, this can be a big problem! At a very basic level, the extra energy exerted by chickens as they move around to avoid the gnats can cause them to suffer from heat stress, especially as gnats are typically most prevalent in already hot weather. But worse than this, black flies (“buffalo gnats”) which are typically the culprits, bite, and their saliva creates an allergic reaction. For humans, this usually just causes an itch. But for chickens, this can lead to allergic shock. Gnats also tend to get caught in chickens’ nostrils and airways, leading to suffocation. We’ve even heard a story of a chicken owner finding her beloved bird covered in gnats, not breathing. She says she “brought her chicken back to life” with Bug Soother when she sprayed her chicken with Bug Soother, and the gnats dispersed!
Whether you have a large poultry farm, or simply a small coop in your backyard, gnats can be a big problem in the summer. So, the question remains: what should you do to keep your chickens gnat-free? Because gnats thrive in hot, sticky environments, putting a fan in your coop can help deter them. Additionally, gnats are drawn to light, so keeping the coop dark inside will discourage them from bothering your chickens.
A final solution is to use our natural bug spray, Bug Soother, which comes in a 32 oz spray bottle, and a gallon jug, making it simple to spray your whole flock! Whether you find one of these natural solutions helpful, or you come up with your own way to keep the gnats at bay for your chickens, we hope you are able to keep your flock gnat-free! How do you keep YOUR chickens or any other outdoor pets & livestock gnat-free?
WOW! Look at the difference!!! Our All-Natural Bug Repellent isn’t just safe for kids and pets, it’s also safe for your lawn!
A demonstration was performed to show the effects of bug spray on grass by undergraduate research associate Zack Olinger. He performed his demonstration on Creeping Bentgrass, a turf commonly found on golf courses. In his demo, he used three products including OFF! Deep Woods Bug Spray, Bug Soother All-Natural Bug Repellent, and Coppertone Sport High Performance Sunscreen.
The results were unbelievable! The bug spray containing the chemical DEET killed the grass within 2-3 days at the location of application. The sunscreen caused the grass to be stressed for a few days. However, our All-Natural Bug Soother (a product that does not contain DEET) was the only one to cause NO adverse affects to the grass as shown in the above photo.

Chrissy Garza, Sales and Marketing
A very enthusiastic member of our team just added in the spring of 2015, Chrissy comes to Simply Soothing with experience in property management, sales, and merchandising. Most notably, her merchandising experience is a huge asset to Simply Soothing’s marketing team!
Tessa Pugh, Research and Development
As Tessa finished her requirements for her teacher licensure in January of 2014, she was approached by Simply Soothing about joining the team at Simply Soothing as our production manager. This allowed her to continue to substitute teach while filling our need for a part-time production manager.
While pursuing her degree in science education and raising her son, Tessa worked as a 4-H coordinator and gave 2 years of service to AmeriCorps in environmental education. All of these experiences, as well as working for her grandmother as a teenager at the Kingsbury Inn, encouraged her to be a problem-solve; an outlook that fit well with the changing nature of our rapidly growing business!
As production manager for the 2014 season, Tessa used her background in science education as well as what she’d picked up about engineering from being a FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge coach to meet the growing needs of Bug Soother. Asking questions, identifying problems and systematically finding solutions served us well!
Now Tessa works for Simply Soothing mostly during the summer (teaching and coordinating the K-12 Talented and Gifted program at Columbus Community School District during the school year) on special projects.
Her current focus is on exporting –it’s always buggy somewhere–
in support of Freda’s goal to be able to provide year-round full-time employment.
We are not just a product, we are a family! #WeAreBugSoother
Alicia brings a wide variety of business skills to the Simply Soothing family. She has a great amount of experience in customer service, having worked in the restaurant business both as a waitress and a manager. She also worked in the insurance industry and most recently at the local school.
Starting in June of 2013, Alicia began working on the Bug Soother production line. By July, she was moved to shipping and customer service. In February of 2014, Alicia transitioned to the head of the shipping department! At the beginning of this year (2015), Alicia was moved once again to accounts receivable and accounts payable before going on maternity leave in the spring.
And now what is she up to? Well, now Alicia is not only doing accounts receivable and payable, she is also monitoring shipping. Whew! She’s a busy gal!
It turns out that Alicia can do just about anything around here. If it’s broken, something is wrong with an order, or something just doesn’t seem right… Alicia is there to help!
Alicia is not a blood relative of owner Freda, but she is a life-long friend of Nikki Salek and feels like Simply Soothing IS her family! She loves working here and has really enjoyed some trips to tradeshows she’s been able to attend to learn more about the industry and how to better communicate our brand to the public!
Stephanie works in our Retail store and shipping and receiving building. She previously worked as a kindergarten associate at Roundy Elemementary Schools in Columbus Junction, Iowa.
